BIO:

Temperament/personality:  Jose, like his sister Conchita, likes to observe before throwing himself into the latest brawl or tumble in the grass.  He loves to be with his brother Bambino or his sister Conchita.  He’s a low-maintenance/chill kind of guy.  He’s kind of like the guy who sits in the dim back corner of the bar barely peaking out of his sombrero while a huge brawl goes on.  He’s just kind of chill.  He loves to be snuggled and we blow lots of raspberries on his belly.  We don’t know if he enjoys such demonstrative displays of love but we get a thrill out of it.

History:   Jose’s mother Willow was surrendered to our rescue when the pups were four weeks old.  Willow is a black and tan long-coat Dachshund and the father is a full Chihuahua (don’t know the coloring).

Training:  Too young to train.  He’s trained to use a potty pad while in foster care.   From Dachworld.com:  “Training a dachshund requires patience and firmness. Dachshunds were bred for their strong independence and to make decisions on their own. Those strong traits remain today and while admirable, make them a very difficult breed to train— difficult, but not impossible!”  So start immediately and be consistent. These dogs are smart…very, very smart.

Best environment:  A loving home with other pups or as an only pup.  He’ll adjust to any loving environment.  He needs someone who has the patience and experience to train him how to be a well-behaved dog and he in turn will be a loyal companion who will warm your heart…and your lap.

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
