NAME: LACEY SIZE: SMALL COAT: SMOOTH COLOR: CHOCOLATE & TAN DAPPLE AGE: 2-1/2 YEARS OLD GENDER: FEMALE WEIGHT: 8.0 POUNDS LOCATION: NCADOPTION FEE: $285.00 My name is Lacey and I was a former puppy mill breeder dog. Luck was with us when our breeder decided to go out of business giving many dogs a chance at the good life. Lacey is a chocolate and tan dapple smooth mini weighing only 8.0 pounds. She was, of course, very frighten of her new surroundings when she first came into rescue. She ran and hid from people but felt very comfortable around all the other foster dachshunds in her new home. Lacey is adjusting and making great progress. She now let's you pick her up and cuddle her which she has discovers she likes. Lacey is good with other dogs but will not tolerate a large dog. Since Lacey has never really been alone it would be best if she is adopted into a home with another small dog, preferably a Dachshund. Needless to say Lacey is crate trained and working on housebreaking. She now has access to a doggie door and is doing very well with it. She still prefers if you go out with her though for potty breaks. She needs a home where she can be put on a regular routine which would help her on the way to house breaking. Lacey realized quickly that being in a foster home and having the freedom to roam a backyard, soak up the sun while lying in grass, having heat and air conditioning was far better then her previous accommodations. Over time Lacey will become trusting of her new guardians and become a wonderful companion. She will need someone with patience to help her overcome her puppy mill past. Lacey would be good with older children who are used to being around a small dog and respect its space. A cat is questionable since no cats are in the foster home. Lacey is not leash trained so she needs a fenced in yard for safety and sunbathing. Lacey has recently been spayed. She is now current on her vaccines, heartworm negative on heartworm and flea prevention. She is microchipped and also has had her teeth cleaned. Preference will be given to North Carolina applicants but applications from South Carolina and Virginia will also be considered, Other states will be considered but you must be willing to travel to NC to pick up your dog once you are approved to adopt. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten. Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
