BIO

Skittles is a courtesy listing and not associated with All American Dachshund Rescue.  Please contact Kathy at the e-mail listed above for further details on Skittles and how to adopt him.

Skittles is a wonderfully sweet and loving fella whose family relinquished him to a vet due to being unable to care for him any longer since he had gown down in his back. The vet did back surgery on 5-26-2012 and he came through with flying colors! He is up and running now, and is completely healed. He has some resulting “wavering” in his back feet, just a SMIDGE, and he runs like the WIND!

It doesn’t slow him up any and I’ve never witnessed him have a falling incident because of it. He keeps up with the other dogs and chases squirrels with the best of them. Since Skittles has had previous back problems, it is VERY important that his weight be kept in check and monitored regularly. He just can’t afford to be overweight anymore. Skittles also wants a home where he can have lots of love and attention, and be able to snuggle with his person.  Although, he does need help getting onto and off of furniture so as to not aggravate his back. He is the best lap warmer you could ever ask for, and settles down nicely. He knows a good thing when he sees one! Skittles has the most slick and smooth coat I’ve ever seen on a dachshund that is red, with a slight black mixed in along his back.

He is a true doll, minds very well, and comes when called. Skittles is not a ‘barker’. He will patiently sit and watch the other dogs run in the yard barking, but he’s content to watch them…not wanting to over exert himself when the other dogs can ‘handle’ it, I’m sure,
haha! Skittles is housetrained. He does not LOVE a crate, and will whine when you first put him in, but he eventually settles down nicely. Skittles currently weighs 16 lbs, and needs to lose about 2-3 more pounds (7-16-12). He gets along very well with male and female dogs, cats, and children. Although, since he has previous back injury issues, I would only recommend a home with older, responsible children.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
