BIO:
Meet Rufus! This handsome boy is looking for a forever home to call his own.
Rufus came from a backyard breeder situation and he is working hard at learning how to be a pet. Rufus' old owner was a man, and so Rufus feels most comfortable around men. He is a real Daddy's Boy! Rufus immediately bonded with his foster dad and as you can see from the picture below, he loves to cuddle up with him and even lets his foster dad hold him like a baby! Rufus is a little more unsure about his foster mom. At first he was quite frightened of her but with a lot of patience he has slowly come around and now lets her pet him and snuggle with him on the couch. He is still a little nervous about letting his foster mom hold him. For this reason we think Rufus would be best in an adult-only home, preferably with at least one man, although he will slowly bond with women if allowed to go at his own pace.
Rufus is working hard at house training and is making progress every day. He does well with a consistent schedule and as we get to know him and learn his signals we are able to get him outside when he needs to go. Rufus never learned to walk on a leash before coming to his foster home but he is making progress in this department and has gone to the bathroom while on a leash. Rufus would do great with a home with a fenced in yard and a dog door, but could also go to a home without a fence if walked regularly. One funny thing about Rufus is that unlike most other dachshunds he has has no problem going outdoors in the rain or snow!
Rufus has done great with his foster brother who is also a dachshund. After a few days figuring out who was going to be the alpha they have settled in nicely. Rufus loves playing with his foster brother and also likes to snuggle beside him on the couch. Rufus does not have food or toy aggression and is good at sharing.
Rufus is a great little guy who is learning what it's like to be a pet instead of living outside and being used for breeding. He is a very handsome guy with a big heart and will be a beautiful, funny and loyal dog! Please feel free to email us with any questions about Rufus and please consider giving him the forever home he wants so bad!
More about RUFUS2...NC
Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
