Solei's Story

How quickly a life can turn. Solei knows this first hand. Within the matter of a couple of days, she found herself lost in a terrifying thunderstorm, very pregnant, and then balancing on the brink of life and death.

Thankfully, Solei and her pups will only know happiness in the future.
All American Dachshund Rescue was able to rescue and save her due to our wonderful members and supporters.

Read about Solei's brave and dramatic journey to find herself and her babies a new home. If Solei has touched your heart as much as she has touched ours, please consider DONATING to help cover the expensive surgery that saved her family's life.

Here is a note from Solei's foster mom:

"Mom and pups are doing great. They opened their eyes at 2 weeks and now they are scooting around. They are still nursing and are so cute .

Solei gets to go outside for potty breaks and get some sunshine- hence her name- Solei.

She barks to go outside- she is TOTALLY housebroken and does not like to use the potty pads. She likes to keep her nest very clean-she licks the pups so much its amazing they have any fur left. She is still very protective of them and when they get picked up she has to be right there or you can see the panic in her eyes.

How Solei Found Rescue

Solei a teeny tiny 3 year old (est.) mini dachshund was found on a Monday, abandoned. Dumped in a busy business park, lost and all alone lying on the grass in the sun. The night and day before there had been a horrific thunderstorm. Solei was dirty and we can only imagine how frightened she must have been during the storms and trying to find shelter. Some wonderful people at one of the businesses, took her into their office, fed her what they could find for her and took turns holding and comforting her and babysat her like a queen all day long.

They found All American Dachshund Rescue on our local Pet Finder and arrangements were made to bring her into Rescue. An ad was posted and local shelter called to see if anyone was looking for her, no one replied and Solei (named for the sun she likes to lay in so much) was officially an AADR Rescue Foster.

Solei Goes Into Labor

We found out Solei was pregnant @ 5/7 weeks along.  Time went on and she got bigger and bigger. She got into trouble on and had to be rushed to the vet on a Friday evening- there was a pup coming out but she wasn’t pushing at all.  At the vet they gave her 2 doses of oxytocin and still nothing- the pup was stuck and then it was breach and really stuck in the birth canal- Solei had to have an emergency C – Section- we watched as she was prepped for surgery- so frightened and so very small at just 8.5 pounds fully pregnant.

Solei Is In More Danger

While doing the surgery we saw DVM Kaplow shaking his head and knew there was more trouble. Solei was born with an extreme genetic anomaly- her kidneys were attached to her ovaries and when he spayed her and took out the uterus for the pups - she tragically lost her right kidney.  The pups were out but Solei was still desperately fighting for her life.

Solei Fights to Hold On

There was trouble reattaching her left kidney as the tissue was so thin and just kept tearing away.  Solei were loosing so much blood and her respiration was down as well.  On the fourth and “one more time” try Dr. Kaplow was able to reattach Solei’s left kidney again- WHAT A MIRACLE!  Solei was alive, but still facing a long recovery. Dr Kaplow assured us that if Solei had not been rescued and tried to have the pups on her own, herself and both pups would have died due to her genetic anomaly. We are so grateful to have saved her and her pups lives!

The Puppies Fight For Life

Meanwhile as the pups were out they were desperately trying to be revived.  They had been under anesthesia just like Solei and it was very difficult to get them breathing.  The female that had been stuck in the birth canal was taking so long and it was so frightening to see this few once helpless little creature try to fight for her life.  FINALLY there was movement and a gasp.  We all cheered for her.  Her brother had been doing fine, he is the bigger of the two and he had been making a face like he wanted to suckle already. We all kept rubbing and rubbing them to keep them warm.

Solei's Family is Reunited

Finally Solei was all put back together lovingly by Dr. Kaplow and it was time to bring her out from anesthesia so she could nurse her pups.  She was so very cold to the touch like an icicle and gray not pink like normal.  The saline used to save her life had brought her red blood count down dramatically and if her blood had been drawn then it would have been a watery light pink. Poor little Solei, just having barely survived life saving surgery and then having to nurse pups as well. The boy latched on like a pro.  His tiny little sister took a long time and kept loosing the teat. It was a struggle for her.  Solei did try valiantly, to see her new babies, and a few times succeeded in lifting her cute little head, but it took all she had just to do that.

Finally Home

After everyone was assured that the pups were going to nurse and Solei was a little more stable.  Off we went to home with all three precious hearts beating.  Instructions were Solei had to be hand fed every 2 hours and pups made sure that they were nursing , sub-Q fluids 2x / day, as well as antibiotics watch closely for urine output.  Saturday morning Solei was still gray as a heavy fog, listless and didn’t seem to want to go on.  She finally perked up a bit after a few feedings and sub-Q fluids but still not her normal self. Solei finally urinated on Sunday evening YEAH so her remaining kidney seems to be functioning well. Solei still needs to be hand fed now about 4-6 times per day, as she only gets out of the whelping box to “do her business” She Finally had a BM on Monday night as well- glory be.  So internally everything seems to be in working order again. She is still getting sub-Q fluids 1x/day for at least the rest of the week.  The pups are getting bigger and nursing well.  Solei still has a long way to go to regain her strength but she is a fighter.
The pups have been named
Phoenix and Seraphine in honor of Dr. Kaplows children.

Thank you so much for helping Solei and her babies!!!

More about Solei...CA

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
