Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteer that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast or up and down the West Coast. We just can't get them from one Coast to the other but some day we hope to have enough volunteers to do that as well for now please look for dogs on your coast. Out of State and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. Hans is a small bundle of cuteness. Every time we take him for a walk someone tells us how gorgeous he is. He's only about 7 pounds, and very submissive. He was a breeder dog who was surrendered to a shelter because he had an inverted testicle. He didn’t get adopted because he had never had any human interaction and would run to the back of the cage and cower in fear when someone would try to pet him. He had never worn a collar, gone on a walk, or had any human kindness. After just two weeks with us, he is already turning into a snuggler. He still shys away from being picked up, but he will come to you immediately if he has stairs to join you on the couch or bed. He will also follow you around and doesn’t like being away from you. Once you pick him up, he is fine, and never gets tired of being petted or just sleeping beside you. He is a sweet, sweet boy. I am sure he will completely recover from his difficult past and eventually not be afraid of new people. He needs to be in a home with not too much activity as he still gets spooked sometimes, so I’d say a home without small children would be best.
He loves our other dogs. At first he was afraid of them as well, but now he wants to snuggle up with them. He loves to give them kisses and will lick them in the face until they pay attention to him. He tries to do that to me, too, in the middle of the night!
Housebreaking was a totally new idea for him, and the first week we cleaned up puddle after puddle. We haven't had an accident in several days, so I am cautiously saying he is housebroken, but may need some reinforcement. Because he has spent so much time locked up in a cage, I don’t want to crate him. He would be great for someone who has time to hold and pet him and take him out on a regular basis. He deserves a life full of love and would make a wonderful pet.

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
