FENCED YARD NEEDED:  Yes - She has slowed down since her youth, and our daily walk has become just around a large block these days. One of her favorite things in the world is to go into our fenced yard and sniff around. She has an independent streak and really likes that off-leash, outdoor time. 

SPECIAL NEEDS:  Surprisingly little for her age! All she needs is a daily Zyrtec pill (vet’s recommendation) for a persistent allergy cough, which I just put in her food. We use the Safeway-brand equivalent medicine, which is much less expensive and works well. She needs doggie stairs at the sofa and bed to ensure she doesn’t jump. She has a bit of arthritis in her legs, but not bad at all for being a senior. She can still see, hear, and smell, although those senses are a bit less sharp than they used to be. She needs to sleep in the bed with you, as she has all her life, so she needs a home where that is allowed. She also needs to be allowed to spend most of her day every day dozing on the sofa. 

HOME W/ SMALL CHILDREN:   She’s always been fine with children, but very small children are probably too young to be with her now that she’s a senior.

HOME W/ CATS:  She’s never been around cats, but probably not. She’s easygoing and friendly around kids and dogs–with everyone, really. When younger, she used to want to play with other dogs, but these days she just gives a sniff to dogs we meet on our walks. We used to have another dachshund who died last year, and they were inseparable. She’d enjoy another dog around, especially if he or she is a pretty mellow dog and not too young.  However, the dogs must be small.  Lacey is afraid of large dogs.  She has been just fine as the only dog since our other dog passed, so whether you have another dog or not would be fine. She hasn’t been around cats very much, and I don’t think that would be a great fit. She chases the neighbor's cat out of our yard when she walks by.

MONTHLY HEARTWORM DATE:  1^st of each month 

BIO:  My husband is being treated for cancer, and we have to move overseas. We had hoped we could delay the moving until Lacey lived out her natural life, but we can’t–we need to use this window of time between my husband’s chemo treatments. This is deeply sad for us, and we’re seeking you, a person who loves dachshunds and can give her the home she deserves. She’s a great dog who has been a loyal friend for many years and is in excellent health despite being a senior. Our vet thinks it’s possible she could have years more because she’s doing really well. We need to move on July 1, 2023, so we’re hopeful we can find you before then. 

I’m hopeful that in your home, she can spend her days napping on the sofa under a blanket. Like most dachshunds, she doesn’t like to get cold. She will just want to be near you, keeping an eye on you and lying in a chair or sofa when you sit down. She perks up and paces about ½ hour before her two daily meals, and otherwise, she’s a super easygoing senior dog who sleeps a lot and enjoys the occasional belly rub and ear scratch. Her favorite things in the whole world are a little treat or a little bit of peanut butter in a Kong toy and a little time each day to poke around a fenced yard. She has had at least one of us around full-time since the pandemic, so I’m hopeful you work from home or are retired. She can be left alone and will just sleep if you are away, but she will be much happier with you around. She is such a good companion.  

This is a very hard situation, and if you are the person who can love and care for Lacey, you will be an angel to my husband and me and, most of all, to Lacey. In return, you will have a lovely, funny, still spunky, adorable little dachshund in her twilight years. Thank you.

There will be an additional $60 fee added for a required Health Certificate if traveling out of the state in which they are being fostered. 

We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states.  If you have any issue with this, you will need to take this up with your legislatures.
