Little Mr. Hamlet is about the cutest little dachshund puppy you'll ever see. He's a chocolate, red, and white double dapple—so very handsome! He's an easy-going, happy boy and never meets a lap he doesn't enjoy snuggling up in and having a nap! Hamlet was turned in to a “drop area” at a shelter---who could have done such a thing to a sweet boy?!!! Due to breeding for the double dapple color, it is common to have birth defects, mainly blindness and/or deafness. Hamlet does have “low vision” as diagnosed by the vet, but sees fairly well and gets around the house with few collisions. He's a smart boy and it doesn't take him long to learn the lay of the land. He can hear well and his hearing and sense of smell compensate for his decreased vision. Hamlet really is handicapped very little by his vision and he's just like any other puppy, running and playing with the other dogs. Hamlet's main sight deficiency is that it's hard for him to judge “edges” of porches, stairs, beds, etc..., so care would need to be taken to prevent falls around the house. He also needs a home that is not too chaotic so no one will step on him because he can't see you coming far in advance to get out of the way.
Hamlet is only 6 months old and is learning housetraining manners. He has come a long way! He sleeps in a crate at night and when his foster mom is away, but he does not like a crate at all! He yelps like his little heart will break—he wants to be with his people! He'll settle down after a little while—especially if he's had a hard playtime before bed. He has the capacity to be a professional-grade snuggle bug if his forever family wanted a bed buddy. He's got a very sweet temperament, is laid back, and a love bug. Hamlet is fairly low energy for a puppy and is very content to be held. The sense of touch is very important to him. Hamlet would do best in a home with any small dog who would be kind to him and show him the ropes and play gently. He's fine with cats and kids, but must go to a home with children old enough to know how to handle a dachshund and keep fences and gates closed where he will never be in harms way. He also walks well on a leash.
He is neutered, up-to-date on all vaccines, and is on heart worm prevention. He is in excellent health and needs no special medical care different than any other dog. He currently weighs about 7 pounds and an estimate is he'll weigh about 12-14 as an adult. He's a bundle of sweet puppy love and will steal your heart in a fraction of a second!
