BIO (8/26/2019):  Rusty was surrendered to an animal shelter when his owner could no longer care for him.  He was very well loved and is very overweight.  His diet and exercise program is going well and he has already lost 4 pounds.  His new family will need to continue his weight loss program until he reaches a healthy weight and ensure that he stays there.  Despite his size, Rusty loves to play and go for walks.

Rusty is very friendly with new people.  He has a cheerful personality and would be fine with respectful children.  He likes to play with other small dogs or with a toy.  He is a little nervous around big dogs, but if they are introduced slowly, he is fine.  He would do fine as an only dog as long as he gets attention from his people.  Rusty does not do well with cats.  He barks and tries to chase them.

Rusty would love a fenced yard to play in and walks around the neighborhood too.  During the day, Rusty stays in a dog friendly area of the house.  He barks for a short time when he is first left, so he would not do well in an apartment.  He will use a pee pad if he is left for extended periods.  At night, Rusty sleeps quietly in a dog bed but he would be very happy to sleep with his people.  When crated, Rusty will bark and whine at first, but eventually settles in.

If you are looking for a happy companion and are willing to help him achieve his weight loss goal, Rusty is the boy for you!

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
